Metcalfe Architecture & Design

Public Garden
Project-based contract for national press

Metcalfe Architecture & Design, based in Philadelphia, designed an unusual tree canopy walk for the Morris Arboretum, an historic public garden owned by the University of Pennsylvania.

There were many compelling aspects of the design and construction; the structure was built on micropiles, amid the roots of old-growth forest and around one treasured trophy tree. Additionally, the story of how the arboretum came to commission the sidewalk in the sky was an interesting one.

Out on a Limb, the tree canopy walk, opened in the summer of 2009, with a fair amount of local press.
